Using Window Films to Stop UV Fading

Updated: Aug 13

We all want our homes, office, and workspaces to remain beautiful, and we often love to introduce natural light to these areas. Unfortunately, the sun's rays can fade the colors of the surfaces we leave exposed to it. Luckily there is a proven option used worldwide in museums, historic buildings, and private residences.

Window films are a popular solution for those looking to reduce UV fading of valuable possessions, such as artwork, window treatments, furniture, and flooring that are exposed to direct sunlight. 3M films work by filtering out 99% of harmful UV rays, high percentages of infrared rays, and even some light rays that enter a space, which in turn reduces the fading of items that are prone to it.

Causes of Fading
Causes of Fading

How do window films reduce fading? First we must understand what causes fading. The largest contributor to fading -about 40%- is Ultraviolet (UV) Rays. UV rays are just outside of the visible light spectrum and penetrate surfaces, like your skin, to deliver radiation. The next contributor to fading -about 25%- is solar heat, in the form of Infrared (IR) rays. These rays are also outside of the visible light spectrum and heat surfaces up.  The next factor is visible light, -about 25%- which films can control based on their Visible Light Transmission (VLT). The last cause is other/miscellaneous, which accounts for about 10% of fading.

While no film can stop fading completely, 3M films dramatically slow the progress of fading to keep your possessions looking beautiful longer. All 3M films boast 99% UV rejection, and some offer heat rejection in the 80%, which can tackle the major causes of fading. You have made a significant investment in your home, workspace or project, let 3M Window Films keep it looking great.
